Caledonia, N.Y. – A woman who was hunting was fatally shot in Caledonia, according to the Livingston County Sheriff.
It happened on West River Road near the Genesee River Sunday around 3:50 p.m.
The victim, a 45-year-old Rochester woman, was with a group of about five hunters when she was shot.
“The layout of the incident location was a cut soybean field right along the Genesee River,” said Lt. Joshua Verhague of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. “It’s pretty open and goes away down.”
She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to her stomach where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not yet been released per the request of the family.
Livingston County Sheriff’s deputies said the man who shot her was John Lander, 50, of Rochester. The circumstances of the shooting have not yet been disclosed.
The DEC says this is the third fatal deer hunting incident in New York State this hunting season.
It is all the reason the DEC reminds everyone to put safety first and know the rules in the State of New York.
“Often we see hunters not knowing their target and their target environment and improper handling of firearms,” Verhague said. “We can’t stress it enough.”
